What does 18kt mean?

Do you ever notice there are some markings such as “AU750”, “18K”, “9999” etc engraved on the Jewellery?

Those in fact represents the purity of gold for jewellery product.

「K」means 「Karat」, which represents the Purity of Gold. Pure Gold is composed of 100% Gold, while 24K is close to 99.99% of Gold (where formula : 1K=1/24)

Traditionally the texture of 24K gold product is soft and easy to be transformed or left with scar on daily wearing. Due to this characteristic , 24K gold is not suitable to make sophisticated Jewelleries.

People found that the hardiness, elasticity and even color can be changed if putting other metals such as Silver, Copper, Zinc, Palladium, Nickel etcs while melting gold (Au).

18K gold (or AU 750) consists of 75% gold and metal alloy (Silver, Copper, Nickel etcs). 18K gold product takes the advantage of maintaining the high gold value, and suitable to produce jewelleries benefit from higher hardiness and elasticity.

The color of Karat Gold product can be customized. We can find a wide range of color choices. Most common and popular are White, Yellow, and Rose Red.

Yellow gold is an outcome of the alloy mixture of Gold, Silver and Copper. The original color of Gold is Yellow. It is the majority of commercial use.

White gold is gold with 25% mixture of Palladium, Nickel and Zinc. It comes with nice reflection, hardiness and resistance.

Rose gold also is mixture of Gold, Silver and Copper on different proportion other than Yellow gold.

Recently many color can be seen, for instance, Red, Green, Blue, Purple and even Black.

However, factories keep their production secret.
